Today, on my drive into my healing space to help clients, I saw three opossums at various parts of the road over the 40-minute drive. And I couldn’t help but think, “Alright, Universe, I see you!” I’ve learned to pay attention when nature throws a symbol my way multiple times.
The opossum, that nocturnal wanderer, has a lot to teach about navigating darkness and embracing resilience. As I continued down the road, I thought about how these scrappy little creatures aren’t out there trying to win any popularity contests. Instead, they’re just trying to survive, adapt, and make the best of whatever comes their way.
The Opossum’s Lesson on Resilience
The opossum’s whole vibe is about resilience—not in a flashy, warrior kind of way, but in a quiet, “play dead and wait it out” sort of strategy. And isn’t that a perfect metaphor for what it feels like to heal through grief?
Much like the opossum, I’ve found myself “playing dead” in my own way—giving myself permission to lie low and just be with the weight of my emotions after losing Jujube. Just like the opossum’s instinct to surrender in the face of danger, I’m learning that sometimes the most courageous act is to let go.
Embracing the Pause in Healing
Healing isn’t always about charging forward or conquering challenges head-on. Sometimes, it’s about releasing the fight, stopping the struggle, and trusting the process of renewal.
The opossum’s defense mechanism isn’t about giving up; it’s about finding strength in surrender. There’s wisdom in knowing when to lay down your fight, take a deep breath (or “play dead” if you must), and let things unfold naturally.
Growth in Stillness
This isn’t about passivity—rather, it’s about recognizing that some of the greatest growth comes from stillness. When we allow life to take its course, we can trust that we will eventually find our way back to the light, in our own time.
A Message of Self-Compassion
So, thank you, opossums, for your roadside wisdom today. You’ve reminded me that healing isn’t about constantly moving forward. Sometimes, it’s about embracing the pause, releasing what no longer serves us, and finding loving self-compassion in the process.
